Thanks to the Ontario government, York University will bring a new, 21st century campus to the vibrant and growing Markham Centre, in collaboration with its partners, the City of Markham, The Regional Municipality of York and Seneca College.

In direct response to increasing demand for high-quality education in Ontario’s new economy, the campus will offer professionally-relevant academic programs and workplace-based learning opportunities to over 4,400* students. With easy access to transit, major employers and research hubs, the York University Markham Centre will be a truly integrated, urban campus.

  • The proposed site will be at the core of a robust urban centre with easy access to transit, major employers, research centres, the Markham Pan Am Centre, and more.

Leveraging Partnerships

  • Partnering with York Region, and the City of Markham, the new campus will host a few joint programs with Seneca College, creating innovative opportunities for new types of programs.
  • Working with significant economic clusters already present in York Region – including information and communication technology, life sciences and healthcare technologies, financial and insurance services, and clean technology.

A York University campus will benefit York Region and help it to grow

  • Answers a key economic priority. A university campus has been identified as the top economic priority for York Region in the Region’s Economic Development Action Plan.
  • Delivers on York Region’s vision for the future. This proposal aligns with York Region’s vision for the future: as stated in York Region’s Vision 2051 long-term planning document.
  • Provides education that prepares students. To meet the evolving needs of York Region students and employers, York University will offer degree programs including diverse professional programs.
  • Fosters innovation. A state-of-the-art campus will be home to innovative educational and research programs designed to meet regional needs and maximize regional impacts.
  • Builds the community. Working together, forming partnerships, sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for commercialization and jobs will maximize research outcomes in areas as diverse as entrepreneurship, health, IT, literacy, education, culture, sustainability, and social justice.
  • Aligns with the needs of regional employers. York Region is projected to create 280,000 jobs from 2010 through 2030. York Region’s major economic clusters are vital to the success of Ontario’s economy.

*Student enrolment is planned to grow steadily to 4,400 students after the doors open in 2021-2022
